Role:               Freelance Producer to Li-E Chen

Contract:         Freelance, project based - Contingent to Funding

Hours:             Part-time

Period:            Commencing Jun/Jul 2019 with view to develop into 2022

Salary:            Negotiable (dependant on experience)


Job description:

Li-E Chen is recruiting for a freelance PRODUCER to support her next three to four years of artistic development that has come out of her recent One-Year R&D Opera Project: A Silent Opera on the Life and Art of Tehching Hsieh 2017-2018. The Producer will provide support for Li-E Chen’s upcoming new writing, performance, residencies and development opportunities. They will collaborate with Li-E Chen on developing partnerships for arts, theatre new writing and music residencies, fundraisings and finance management.

The producer will be required to have experience working in traditional new writing for theatre, classical music, contemporary arts and performance, national and international touring, youth programmes and is passionate about developing contemporary opera.


The role requires someone who is able to attend meetings and/or events with/on behalf of Li-E Chen, and is comfortable working in unfamiliar forms and open to try new approaches. On occasions outside UK traveling may be required.



  • At least 5 years professional experience in a producing and management role

  • Experience working in traditional new writing for theatre, contemporary opera and classical music

  • Knowledge and experience of writing contracts

  • Excellent budget management skills and experience

  • Well organised and efficient, experienced in achieving and working to deadlines

  • Experience managing and developing projects over a long term period

  • Have a great understanding of the artist’s needs

  • Willingness to collaborate with a curator



  • Interest in contemporary art and performance

  • Some knowledge of conceptual art

  • Have experience producing works that are both inside and outside the mainstream

  • Confident using online platforms such as Instagram and other social media

  • Knowledge and experience of UK and/or International touring

  • Professional work ethic when dealing with sensitive and confidential information
